The Excitement of Painting Animals

The Importance of Finding Your Distinct Version of Interesting

THE BIG IDEA

The Journal of Interesting Animalitious is a 6-week intensive exploration between two ideas, learning how to use a working journal and research process to discover and define your visual framework and giving your imagination and process the freedom to explore painting animals in beautifully wild ways. 20 years ago I had no clue how to find my own style, I just knew I enjoyed painting. Over time, and based on my professional goals, I knew I needed a style, so I committed a year to discovering what creates style for painters, how to choose one I love, and what I really wanted to express through paint and pigment.

The use of a working journal and research process was integral to that journey, and over the years both have completely transformed how I creatively work. The Journal of Interesting courses are specifically designed to teach you the importance and process of using a working journal, how to pose questions and use those curiosities to locate your North Stars, and how to embrace page strategies and creative play as you consider, design, and construct physical ways of painting tied to a point of view and narrative.

The most powerful lessons I’ve learned are within the exploration of my core beliefs, visual indicators, North stars, and permission to explore what I LOVE and am fascinated by!
This is already showing up in my collage work- I’m taking more risks and remembering that my weirdness is what makes me unique, and to embrace that. I know that I want to explore more magical realism in my work moving forward.

My JOI has become a bit of a brainstorm/journal of that healing journey.
