Come fine-tune your painting skills, give your five-year-old self permission to play, or simply make something because making it feels good.

A Six-Week Online Self-Portrait Painting Experience

Your face. Your pose. Your point of view.

Start with something you already have…a selfie.

Not a perfect photograph or professional lighting. Not your “good side.” Choose an expression, a gesture, a mood, a ridiculous pose, a quiet moment…something that gives us a place to begin.

Then we’ll take it apart.

Over six weeks, I’ll guide you from selfie → sketch → structure → layers → color → marks → pattern → story → finished mixed-media portrait as you discover your version of beautifully different or interesting.

We’ll explore the foundations that make a portrait work while pushing beyond simply reproducing what the camera sees.

Because I’m not particularly interested in teaching you to make a photograph with paint.

I want to help you discover what happens when YOU get involved.

Your marks.
Your colors.
Your exaggerations.
Your symbols.
Your story.
Your wonderfully strange creative decisions.

We’ll distort, simplify, layer, scrape, draw, paint, collage, respond and change our minds. We’ll learn when likeness matters, and when breaking away from it makes the painting far more interesting.

Somewhere along the way, the question changes from:

“Does this look like me?”

to

“Does this feel like mine?”

You don't need to already know how to paint portraits.

You need enough curiosity to look at yourself differently and enough willingness to stay with the process when the painting gets wonderfully weird.

What happens when you don't get to make every creative decision?

Welcome to Art Dice Club, a wildly unpredictable mixed-media painting night where the roll of the dice determines what happens next.

We'll roll for elements such as color, line, shape, texture, pattern and other creative prompts and then figure out how to make them work together on the canvas.

Sometimes the dice will give you exactly what you hoped for.

Sometimes they absolutely will not.

That's where the fun begins.

I'll guide you through strategies for responding to unexpected combinations, making stronger creative decisions and working through those wonderfully awkward what-on-earth-do-I-do-with-this? moments.

This isn't about making the same painting as everyone else. It's about loosening your grip on the outcome, trusting your instincts and discovering what you're capable of when your usual choices aren't available.

Expect paint. Expect laughter. Expect a few questionable rolls.

And expect to leave with a mixed-media painting you probably never would have made on your own.

Your selfie is about to have a very interesting evening.

Grab your girlfriends, best friend, boyfriends, or any friend and bring your willingness to surrender control.

We begin with your selfie and a few creative strategies from me for working with faces, expressive marks, color, pattern, layering and mixed media.

Then the clock starts.

Every seven minutes…PASS.

Your painting moves to the next person.

They add something.

Seven minutes later?

PASS.

Around the table it goes, collecting marks, colors, ideas and wonderfully unexpected decisions from everyone it meets.

Eventually your portrait makes its way back to you…and that's when you get to finish strong, pulling all those surprising contributions together into a mixed-media portrait that could never have happened without the group.

You don't need portrait experience. You don't need to know what you're doing before you arrive.

In fact, not knowing what's going to happen is rather the point.

It's part painting night, part creative experiment and part girls' night out—with plenty of laughter built into the process.
